AC Selection Guide for Indian Apartments
Choosing the Right AC for Your Flat
Air conditioning is essential in most Indian cities for 6-8 months a year. Choosing the right AC saves money on both purchase and electricity bills for years.
Split vs Window
Split ACs dominate modern apartments due to quieter operation and better aesthetics. Window ACs cost 30-40% less and are easier to install but louder and less efficient. If your flat has pre-installed split AC piping (common in newer buildings), go with split.
Tonnage Calculation
1 ton: rooms up to 120 sq ft. 1.5 ton: rooms 120-180 sq ft (most common bedroom/living room size). 2 ton: rooms 180-240 sq ft or rooms with large windows/direct sun. Add 0.5 ton if the room faces west, is on the top floor, or has floor-to-ceiling windows.
Energy Ratings
5-star ACs cost Rs 5,000-15,000 more upfront but save Rs 2,000-4,000 per year in electricity. Payback period: 2-4 years. Over a 10-year lifespan, a 5-star saves Rs 15,000-30,000 net. Always buy 5-star if you plan to use the AC regularly.
Inverter vs Non-Inverter
Inverter ACs adjust compressor speed based on room temperature, using 30-50% less electricity. Non-inverter ACs are cheaper but cost more to run. For Delhi NCR where ACs run 6-8 months, inverter pays for itself within 2 seasons.
