Furnishing a Rental Flat Without Losing Your Deposit
Making a Rental Your Own
You want your rental to feel like home, but every nail hole and paint mark risks your security deposit. Here is how to personalize without permanent damage.
Walls
Use command strips and removable hooks instead of nails. Removable wallpaper or peel-and-stick panels for an accent wall. If you must paint, photograph the original color and plan to repaint at exit (still cheaper than losing Rs 50,000+ from your deposit).
Lighting
Swap ugly ceiling fixtures with your own (store the originals safely for reinstallation at exit). Add floor lamps and table lamps for ambiance. Smart bulbs change the mood without any wiring changes.
Floors
Area rugs cover ugly flooring without damage. Interlocking floor tiles (available at Rs 30-60/sq ft) can be laid and removed without adhesive.
Documentation
Photograph everything at move-in: walls, floors, fittings, appliances. Share photos with the landlord via email (creates a timestamped record). At move-out, restore everything to documented original condition. This photographic evidence protects your deposit better than any agreement clause. Find well-maintained rentals on Infratyke.
